We love St. Thomas University!
Some people think that the big schools are the best place to go to get a lot of donors registered. While in some cases that might be true (Roll Tide), one of our best events this entire year was at St. Thomas University in Miami, which only has about 1,300 students! The softball team in particular has been a HUGE help in our movement. Their amazing coaching staff and fired up players have signed up almost 500 potential donors this year, making it the school that has signed up the most donors for SAM so far in 2015!
They got involved when a young boy named Brady was diagnosed with aplastic anemia (the same disease Sam has) and was unable to find a match:
So glad we got to meet Brady McLaughlin and his family today at #FAU. Brady is a fellow aplastic anemia fighter and one awesome little guy. Thank you to the 140 students (and a few reporters) that swabbed in his honor today! Come out to St. Thomas University from 9-2 tomorrow to swab for Brady! #50k50states #deletebloodcancer #aplasticanemia #cancersucks #lovebeatscancer #hero #survivor
We hosted an awesome Donor Jam with them back in February when we were in Florida:
@stusoftball you girls are incredible!!! Thank you for everything you've done to prepare for this event and for working your butts off today! Because of you 201 new potential donors were added to the list! And we know you aren't stopping until you #beatbama! Seriously, so much love and gratitude for your team and for the wonderful students/staff at #STU. #happyday #50k50states #deletebloodcancer
Last week, they hosted a “Space Jam” (what we call our satellite events where we can’t be there in person but send the supplies to our wonderful volunteers), and signed up 164 more donors!
The St. Thomas University softball team did it again!!! Last February they helped us register over 330 new potential donors, and last week they held their own SAM Space Jam and swabbed 164 more!! This small school in Miami has officially registered the most donors for SAM! WAHOO!!! ????⚾️? @stusoftball
Thank you STU for your support in the fight against cancer. We love you all and your determination to find matches for every patient in need.
