The Biggest SwabFest in Texas!

On May 8th, I had the privilege of volunteering at a bone marrow drive in Austin, TX called the “Biggest SwabFest in Texas.” The goals of the SwabFest were to beat the record for the largest drive in the state of Texas, save as many lives as possible, and find a match for the inspiration behind the drive- a fantastic man named Brady Oman. Brady, who fought cancer 17 years ago, was diagnosed with this terrible disease for a second time in January of this year and this time it was leukemia. After several rounds of chemo, Brady’s doctors decided that the next step for treatment would be a stem cell transplant as soon as they found him a match.

The drive was a HUGE success and the SwabFest registered an incredible 565 potential donors! This drive was full of energy and positivity, which I quickly learned stemmed from the amazing and loving spirits of Brady and his friends and family. I was able to share Sam and I’s story with several people throughout the day, and their support for S.A.M. and what we are setting out to do was very encouraging. Knowing that we have such wonderful people cheering us on, and especially seeing firsthand the kind of patients and families we are going to be helping, made me even more excited to hit the road.

What is even more encouraging is that BRADY FOUND A MATCH!!! I can’t tell you how happy I was to hear this and know that this wonderful father, friend, and person was going to have the treatment he needs. And for Sam and I, it is another extremely important reminder that there are life-saving heroes out there, just waiting for someone to ask them to step up and sign up to be a donor. LET’S GO GET THEM!

Brady will be undergoing his stem cell transplant on June 11th, and we ask that everyone please send positive thoughts and prayers to him for a quick recovery!
